ACCA DIPLOMA IN IFRS

About International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) is the collection of financial reporting standards developed by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), an independent, international standard setting organisation, of which the Nigerian Accounting Standards Board (NASB) is a member. The aim of IFRS is to provide a single set of high quality, global accounting standards that require transparent and comparable information in general purpose financial statements.

IFRS has become the ‘rave of the moment’ as over 100 countries have already adopted or planning to adopt/converge from their GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) to IFRS.  While the European Union adopted it in 2005 the United States is working at convergence any time soon. The Nigerian Accounting Standards Board (NASB) together with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have already directed that all Nigerian Stock Exchange quoted companies and those in regulated sectors adopt the IFRS by January 2012.

The Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) has introduced the Diploma in IFRS for Accountants who qualified under local accounting standards (SAS) and want to work in any of these companies or work internationally; ACCA is offering a certified IFRS qualification called the Diploma in International Financial Reporting (DipIFR).

What the accounting standard setting bodies and regulators say about IFRS:

Standards” (IFRS). (Ms Arunma Oteh, DG, SEC)

“… the adoption of the globally-accepted financial reporting model in the country would be phased, starting with companies quoted in the stock exchange in 2012” (Mr. Michael Popoola, Chairman NASB)

The Diploma in International Financial Reporting (DipIFR) is designed to develop your knowledge of IFRS by providing an understanding of the concepts and principles which underpin them, and their application in the international marketplace.
